Brett Smiley today released the following statement in response to the “Call to Action” issued Monday by the NAACP Providence Branch. The NAACP issued five recommendations including the creation of new workforce development programs, increased youth development and ex-offender training opportunities, and a community liaison for the Public Safety Commission.
Brett Smiley commented, “We need action now to stop the continual acts of violence that have plagued our community, and I applaud the NAACP for stepping up and saying enough is enough. I am proud to answer the NAACP’s call, and I urge all candidates to do the same. The five recommendations made by the NAACP will help provide economic opportunity for those who need it most and end the cycle of violence and disorder in our neighborhoods. If Mayor Taveras and Governor Chafee have yet to implement these proposals by the time I take office as Mayor, I pledge to take action on all five recommendations immediately.”
